気候変動により、オーストラリアでは山火事が多発している。
その頻度は例年よりも３０％増。
それにより、2019年四半後期から2020年にかけてのオーストラリアでの健康被害も急増している。
山火事との関連が示唆される健康被害による死者の数は417人、1,305人が救急処置を必要とする喘息発作で入院した。さらに3,151人が心疾患や呼吸器疾患で入院した。
心疾患や呼吸器疾患、急性喘息等で入院、死亡した患者の数は、24時間平均PM2.5濃度の値と相関した。
